Welsh rockers discuss absence of revolutionary politics

Leading figures on the Welsh music scene will gather today to discuss the growing disconnection of rock and “revolutionary” politics.

Datblygu manager Rhys Mwyn, who helped the band break ground in Welsh-language rock in the 1980s, is among speakers at the Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg (Welsh Language Society) debate.

“Welsh rock artists have been a lot more than ‘musicians.’ If it was just about music, the words wouldn’t matter,” she said.

Former Cymdeithas president Dafydd Iwan is famed for his role in the campaign for language rights and international causes since the 1960s.

His music still provides the soundtrack to Welsh protests.

But there is concern over a gulf between campaigners and a new generation of artists.

“It’s right for people to ask: ‘Where’s the next generation of genuinely revolutionary bands’,” said Cymdeithas spokesman Iolo Selyf James.

“Where is the fury and

the belief that songs can deliver real change for us in Wales?”
