Horizon scandal raised at FMQs

THE Post Office Horizon scandal was raised in First Minister Questions yesterday, with the Senedd hearing how it affected people running post offices across Wales.

First Minister Mark Drakeford said that the number of people affected in Wales is unknown as more people have come forward since the recent ITV drama, which brought the victims’ issues to the forefront.

He said: “The UK government needs to act now and they need to make sure that those people are properly identified and that compensation for the wrongs that have been inflicted on them is paid to them as fast as possible.”

Welsh Conservative Mark Isherwood sought to share the blame with Labour and Liberal Democrat ministers.

The First Minister said the Counsel General had written to the Secretary of State in the Justice Department in September 2021 about issues relating to the scandal.

“It took over six months for that letter to receive a reply, and it didn’t come from the Ministry of Justice: it came from a minister responsible for small businesses, consumers and labour markets,” Mr Drakeford said.
