Fujistu workers to strike in pay row likely to disrupt self-assessment tax returns

HUNDREDS of Fujitsu workers are set to strike after being offered a pay rise almost 10 times less than their Japanese counterparts.

More than 300 Public and Commercial Services (PCS) members working predominantly for HM Revenue and Customs at Stratford and Telford will walk out next Wednesday.

The scandal-hit company, which was behind the faulty Horizon IT software that saw hundreds of subpostmasters wrongfully convicted, offered a pay rise of between 3 and 4 per cent while Fujitsu workers in Japan were offered up to 29 per cent, PCS said.

The action is likely to disrupt those seeking to complete their self-assessment tax returns by the end of the month, with some IT members, who fix HMRC computers and protect critical HMRC high-end user systems, taking additional action from January 18 to February 15, it added.

PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka said: “Why is the UK government giving Fujitsu lucrative contracts when the company treats its UK workers so badly?”

A Fujistu statement said: “We remain committed to continue pay talks to try to resolve this situation and welcome further discussions at any time.”
