Ex-Tesco lorry drivers offered deal over Stobart redundancy

BRAVE lorry drivers thrown on the scrapheap by former employer Tesco stood on the brink of victory yesterday after a two-year fight.

The 184 members of the Unite union went on strike for four months in 2012 after being transferred to Eddie Stobart by the supermarket giant.

They had been gearing up for a tribunal over claims the two firms conspired in advance of their redundancy just a month after the switch.

Now an 11th-hour settlement offer will be taken to the members.

Unite national officer Adrian Jones said that if they accepted the deal it would be a “resounding success” for those unfairly dismissed.

“The offer is testament to the determination of the drivers to get justice and the brave leadership of the convener Trevor Cheetham and the branch committee,” he said.

Unite added that a “good proportion” of the ex-Tesco drivers were still out of work two years on.
