Union chases £30k owed to workers

Wales: GMB revealed yesterday its solicitors Unionline are taking legal action to pursue redundancy money, holiday pay, pay in lieu of notice and unpaid overtime owed to 18 workers.

The RIS Insulation Ltd of Abertillery workers, who specialised in insulation, were sacked without consultation in August after BBC Three TV presenter Neville Wilshire took over the firm before shutting it down.

GMB claims workers are collectively owed £30,000 and that nothing has been forthcoming from Mr Wilshire.

Vigil shines light on Stallone’s shame

Sheffield: Greens and immigrant campaigners have added their support to a protest against Sylvester Stallone.

Sheffield Palestine Solidarity Campaign organised Sunday’s candlelit vigil after the Rocky and Rambo star helped raise $33 million (£21.7m) for the Israeli army shortly after Israel’s brutal attack on Gaza left 2,139 Palestinians dead.

Mr Stallone’s speaking tour visits Oval Hall on Sunday. The vigil is from 6.30 to 7.15pm at the war memorial outside City Hall.

Release plea for Guantanamo man

Human rights: Amnesty International called yesterday for the last British resident detained in Guantanamo Bay, Shaker Aamer, to be given a date for his safe return.

The United States has held him there for 13 years.

About 18,000 people have signed a petition which calls for Mr Aamer’s release without delay if he is not charged and brought to a fair trial.

Campaigners battle fracking free-for-all

Environment: Anti-fracking campaigners have been carrying out protests across Britain opposing the government’s controversial Infrastructure Bill.

The Bill allows the government to permit fracking firms to drill almost anywhere they want — including beneath people’s homes.

A rally takes place outside Parliament on Monday from 12.30 to 3pm.
