AROUND 200 people marched and rallied in the West Yorkshire towns of Dewsbury and Batley on Saturday in protest against cuts to council services, including the closure of a local leisure centre.
The protesters marched the two miles between the towns.
Kirklees District Council, which covers Dewsbury and Batley, is cutting services and jobs to tackle a budget deficit.
In common with other local authorities, it has lost 50 per cent of its government funding since the Tories came to power at Westminster in 2010.
“The purpose of this protest is to express opposition to the potential closures presented by Kirklees council,” organisers said.
“These closures are expected to have detrimental impacts on both current residents and future generations.
“The youth and elderly in our community have already endured significant hardships and it is unjust for Kirklees residents to bear the consequences of these closures due to mismanagement at local and national political levels.”
The council was invited to comment.
