Many older people need extra support during Storm Ciaran, Age UK says

MANY older people will need extra support after Storm Ciaran leaves thousands of homes without power, Age UK warned today.

Two amber warnings for wind and rain remain in force for Friday after gusts of more than 100mph battered the south of England and the Channel Islands.

The charity warned that this can be especially dangerous for older and vulnerable people, particularly those who live alone, have dementia, rely on medical equipment or have less mobility.

Age UK charity director Caroline Abrahams said: “The weather is becoming more extreme, and we need to do more in advance and when disasters hit to safeguard older people.

“While many can cope when there are power losses, floods and storms, others, including those who are living alone or who are isolated, seriously unwell or living with dementia, will need extra support.”

The charity said a friendly phone call or an offer to help with shopping or to pick up medications could be a lifeline for someone who feels isolated at home during the stormy spell.
