COACH-LOADS of angry south coast residents will descend on London tomorrow, to demand Channel 4 ditches “scapegoating” new reality show Immigration Street.

The protest comes after campaigners in Scotland got the plug pulled on another “poverty porn” show.

Coaches from Southampton, where the Benefits Street sequel was filmed, will take members of the Southampton Communities Alliance and Unite Community to the station’s central London HQ for 11am tomorrow (Friday).

Filming for the programme was repeatedly interrupted after impromptu protests broke out in the town. On one occasion film crews reportedly fled after being pelted with eggs and flour.

Unite Community branch officer Joe Dukes said: “The communities of Southampton do not think that this programme will add anything to the debate on migration.

“In fact, we think that just like Benefit Street it will scapegoat an already vulnerable group of people.

“The majority of people of Derby Road are from many ethnic backgrounds and have lived there for generations. They do not want to be branded as ‘immigrants’ with all the associated risks of attracting extremist behaviour.

“We are asking Channel 4 to be a responsible broadcaster and cancel this programme.”

In Stevenson, Ayrshire, activists recently got wind of Channel 5’s plans to produce a similar show, after researchers turned up in the town.

Labour councillor Joe Cullinane started a petition to register residents’ disgust.

“These shows, like Benefits Street and The Scheme, take advantage of local communities and vulnerable people,” he said.

But within hours of launching their petition, Channel 5 confirmed to the activists the show would not go ahead in Stevenson.
