UNITED STATES: Some 6,800 members of the United Auto Workers at the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant in Michigan walked out as part of the union’s “Stand Up Strike” for a new and improved contract.

The plant is the largest operated by Stellantis, one of the “Big Three” US car manufacturers, alongside Ford and General Motors.

TURKEY: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has submitted a protocol for Sweden’s admission into Nato to Turkey’s parliament for ratification, his office said today.

President Erdogan had been delaying ratification of Sweden’s membership, accusing Stockholm of being too soft on Kurdish militants and other groups he considers to be security threats.

Turkey also was angered by a series of Koran-burning protests in Sweden.

SWITZERLAND: The right-wing anti-immigration Swiss People’s Party expanded its hold as the largest single party in the country’s lower house of parliament, the National Council, by winning nine seats in Sunday’s elections.

They now hold 62 of the country’s 200 seats with the Socialists second with 41 seats.

SPAIN: Some 314 migrants arrived in Spain’s Canary Islands in two boats early today, bringing to more than 1,600 the number of migrants to reach the islands since Friday, emergency services said.

The service said one boat carrying 229 migrants was escorted to El Hierro island while another with 85 was taken to Tenerife.

Of the boats that arrived over the weekend, one on Saturday was carrying 320 migrants. The state news agency EFE said it was the largest number in a single boat since human traffickers began to regularly use the Canary Island route in 1994.
