Chelsea 1 Manchester City 1

Nothing Mour City could do in draw writes Amar Azam at Stamford Bridge

Jose Mourinho may feel aggrieved at the perceived unjust treatment that both he and his players are receiving but we know it is all part of how he creates that siege mentality.

In his mind, they have done no wrong. He will reinforce that message to his players ahead of their visit to Aston Villa this weekend.

It is something so wonderfully simple, something we’ve seen time and time again.

This draw against their title rivals Manchester City ensured that the five-point game between the teams remained as it was.

Chelsea had taken the lead through French striker Loic Remy near the end of the first half after a wonderful assist from Eden Hazard.

The visitors responded a minute later when Chelsea’s goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois made an uncharacteristic mistake, helplessly flailing at the ball in the penalty area.

It fell to Sergio Aguero, whose shot was diverted into the goal by playmaker David Silva.

The match may have ended in a stalemate but it was Chelsea and their manager who would have gone away the happier.

We can only assume this as Mourinho flaty refused any media duties in the aftermath to this match and we can expect him to stay quiet for some time. He didn’t even offer his assistant manager Steve Holland.

During the middle of last week, the Chelsea boss was fined £25,000 for comments he made after the 1-1 draw with Southampton in December.

Meanwhile, Diego Costa was suspended for three matches, beginning with this one, for a stamp during the League Cup semi-final against Liverpool.

So it was left for his side to do the talking on the pitch. City applied pressure in a second half in which they played better, but they couldn’t find the breakthrough. Manager Manuel Pellegrini was left frustrated.

“We wanted to close the gap. We tried to but we couldn’t but we still have 45 points to play for,” he said.

“It was a very important game but it was not a final. We have time to recover these five points and if we play in the way we played it will be easier.”

He added: “You may say it is a good point at Stamford Bridge but for me it is not because we were better than Chelsea. I thought that we deserved more than a point because we had clear chances.”

City will need to return to winning ways in their next match, at home to Hull City.
