Almost 30,000 retail jobs have been lost in Wales since 2010, union finds

A UNION study revealed today that almost 30,000 retail jobs have been lost in Wales since 2010.

The GMB released the figures as the last Wilko stores closed their doors and called for economic reforms to be made across Britain to save the nation’s high streets.

GMB national secretary Andy Prendergast said: “High street retail is at the heart of our communities, but customers and workers are denied a fair deal.

“These shocking figures are a wakeup call that Wilko was not the first, and it will not be the last.”

GMB called on the Labour Party at its Liverpool conference to replace the business rates system, strengthen redundancy rights and establish minimum ownership requirements for critical national retailers.

A Welsh government spokeswoman said: “In May, we launched our retail action plan to support the sector during a period of significant change.”
