Staff at the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) began a two-day strike yesterday in a dispute over pay.
Members of public-sector union PCS at the Cheshire-based office, which monitors and enforces the right of access to public information, walked out over pay rates that are lower than those for equivalent jobs in the Civil Service.
“Pay at the ICO has stagnated because of George Osborne’s cuts, but the most highly paid executives have had huge increases,” said PCS industrial officer Claire Jones.
“It is grossly unfair that the majority of staff who work hard to improve access to information for everyone are being denied a decent pay rise.”
The organisation was responsible for uncovering the blacklisting scandal when in 2009 ICO officers seized a Consulting Association blacklist containing the names of more than 3,000 mainly construction workers.
