Labour MP asks Leeds University vice-chancellor to personally intervene on strike

RICHARD BURGON MP has called on University of Leeds’s vice-chancellor to personally intervene to resolve strikes by support staff.

He shared his open letter to Professor Simone Buitendijk on the 51st of day of industrial action by Unison members since February last year.

The socialist MP wrote that having workers miss meals so their children do not go hungry “cannot be the way for a sector that describes itself as ‘world class’ to operate.”

He said that below-inflation pay rises had left staff with an “unsustainable” 30 per cent real-terms loss despite the higher education sector enjoying “great financial success.”

The Leeds MP noted that the vice-chancellor hadn’t attended the only meeting between the university’s executive and union officials.

He said: “I call on you to personally intervene and get round the negotiating table to try to reach a fair resolution in the interests of staff, students and the institution of the University of Leeds.”

The university has been contacted for comment.
