China celebrates 74th anniversary of the creation of the People’s Republic

CHINA today celebrated the 74th anniversary of the creation of the People’s Republic under the leadership of Mao Zedong.

Chinese President Xi Jinping led the country’s National Day tributes to the martyrs of the revolution in 1949 at the monument dedicated to them in Tiananmen Square, in the heart of the capital Beijing.

In a speech to senior government officials and international guests, President Xi said that over the last 74 years China has transformed from being a poor to a prosperous country in all aspects, having pursued modernisation.

But, President Xi said, the country still needed to tackle major problems including increasing employment and continuing the fight against poverty.

“We contemplate promising horizons, unity is strength and trust is worth more than gold, we must lift our spirits to overcome difficulties and move forward together towards the great goal of building a powerful country and the revitalisation of the nation.”

On an international level, Mr Xi said China wanted to “prevent major risks, promote high-level foreign opening, deepen reform, promote high-quality development of the Belt and Road Initiative, which will all help to build a more resilient economy.”

Mr Xi added that the reunification of the country (meaning with Taiwan) is the greatest aspiration of the people: “It constitutes a historical necessity and no force can stop it.”
