TREASURY axeman Danny Alexander could be the highest ranking Con-Dem casualty of the general election, results of a new poll suggested yesterday.

The Lib Dem Chief Secretary to the Treasury faces election night humiliation as his reward for helping Chancellor George Osborne deliver unprecedented cuts.

Mr Alexander is set to lose his Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey seat to the SNP by a stunning 29 points, according to a poll for millionaire Tory donor Michael Ashcroft.

The extensive survey of 16 Scottish swing seats showed that the SNP was leading in 15, including the Gordon constituency being contested by Alex Salmond.

SNP Commons leader Angus Robertson said the results showed that “Scotland needs and wants an alternative to austerity cuts, cancellation of the horrendously expensive Trident renewal and real home rule.”

The poll also dealt a blow to Labour hopes of claiming a slim majority in May.

It predicted that shadow foreign secretary Douglas Alexander, charged with leading Labour’s general election campaign across Britain, would lose his own seat to the SNP surge.

Mr Alexander’s 16,614 majority would be wiped out in a 25 per cent swing to the SNP, which has not yet selected a candidate for the seat.

That may force leader Ed Miliband to consider who could step into Mr Alexander’s shoes as foreign secretary if he loses his seat on the night Labour wins power.

Scottish Labour leader Jim Murphy admitted the party “has a big gap to close” on the SNP, but claimed: “In the end the only people who will benefit from these polls are David Cameron and the Tories.”
