ETHIOPIA: Fresh fighting has erupted in the second-biggest town of the turbulent Amhara region as militia fighters clashed with the military over government plans to disarm local forces.

Member of the Fano militia fought military units on Sunday in the town of Gondar, an important tourist and commercial hub, residents told reporters.

 

PAKISTAN: Prominent television journalist Imran Riaz Khan, who went missing after his arrest more than four months ago, was freed today and returned home, police and his colleagues said.

Mr Khan, who is known for publicly supporting jailed former prime minister Imran Khan, was arrested in May at an airport in Sialkot, a city in Punjab province, as he tried to leave Pakistan. 

 

EGYPT: A presidential election will be held over three days in December, officials announced today.

National Election Authority chairman Waleed Hamza said the election would take place from December 10 to 12, with a run-off from January 8 to 10 if no candidate secures more than 50 per cent of the vote.

A handful of politicians have announced that they will seek to become president, but none is thought likely to pose a serious challenge to incumbent Abdel Fattah el-Sissi, who has held power since 2014.

 

TAIWAN: Authorities said late on Sunday that one person remained missing following a fire at a golf-ball factory on the breakaway Chinese island after forensic analysis revealed that some bones found earlier in the day were not human.

Friday night’s blaze killed nine other people, including four firefighters. Launch Technologies, the operator of the plant, is a major global supplier of golf balls.
