US PRESIDENT Joe Biden will travel to Michigan on Tuesday to join a United Auto Worker (UAW) picket line in a display of support for the union’s strike against the big three car manufacturers: Ford, GM and Stellantis.

Mr Biden has accepted an invitation by UAW president Shawn Fain to join the strikers as the union ratchets up its campaign.

“Tuesday, I’ll go to Michigan to join the picket line and stand in solidarity with the men and women of UAW as they fight for a fair share of the value they helped create,” Mr Biden said.

“It’s time for a win-win agreement that keeps American auto manufacturing thriving with well-paid UAW jobs.”

Meanwhile, former president Donald Trump has tried to get in on the act by arranging to meet with striking workers and rank-and-file trade unionists in Detroit on Wednesday, but he will not attend a picket line.

Mr Trump blames President Biden and the development of electric vehicles for the decline of the US auto industry.
