Daley Blind nabs point for Man U

West Ham 1-1 Man Utd, by Paul Donovan at the Boleyn Ground

A pulsating encounter saw Manchester United snatch a point at the death after enduring long periods of West Ham dominance.

The Irons had the best of the first half, creating a number of chances that they failed to put away.

Enner Valencia was the main West Ham threat in the first half, firing a shot from the edge of the penalty area that was saved away to his left by the excellent David De Gea. Valencia had another shot on the turn from the resulting corner, this time tipped over by the keeper.

West Ham kept up the pressure with the pace of Valencia and Diafra Sakho presenting a constant threat to the rather ponderous United rearguard.

United came back towards the end of the half though, forcing a number of corners, but it was the 41st minute before Adrian was called upon to make a save — which he easily clutched to his midriff.

The second half was just three minutes old when Mark Noble floated over a free-kick that found Cheikhou Kouyate free in the area. The big Senegalese international turned and crashed the ball home past a despairing De Gea.

United came back putting West Ham under pressure, with Adrian saving at the foot of the post and then Tompkins executing a beautifully timed block tackle to stop Robin van Persie as he was about to pull the trigger on the edge of the six-yard box.

In the 63rd minute Carl Jenkinson clipped a ball over from the right-hand side that went over De Gea and missed the far upright by inches.

The more mobile West Ham formation with Sakho and Valencia minus Andy Carroll presented a constant threat all afternoon.

In the 76th minute United were presented with a golden opportunity

to equalise when the ball broke for Radamel Falcao in the area with only Adrian to beat, but the home keeper spread himself and the effort went wide.

United had another chance in the 82nd minute this time Adrian pushing over the effort.

The 86th minute saw De Gea first push a Noble shot aside then turn the follow up round the corner.

Another corner followed with a cross from Jenkinson being just headed over by Jarvis.

The drama ratched up as this game reached a crescendo, with United defender Luke Shaw sent off on 90 minutes for a second bookable offence.

But United were not done, with the ball breaking in injury time for Daley Blind to ram home. Honours even at the end of a great afternoon of football.
