HUNDREDS of workers at North Tyneside Council are to strike next month in a dispute over pay, the Unite union announced today.
The 260-plus workers have rejected the national pay offer of a flat-rate increase of £1,925, the union said.
Unite said that the proposal was below the rate of inflation, making it effectively a real-terms pay cut.
The workers, predominantly building tradespeople, health visitors, school and nursery nurses, administrative staff and those providing bereavement services, will initially strike next Wednesday and on September 13.
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “Our members provide critical front-line council services.
“Despite the essential roles our members undertake, their employer thinks it is acceptable to propose what amounts to yet another real-terms pay cut at a time when they increasingly can’t make ends meet.
“Unite never takes a backward step in supporting its members and is dedicated to enhancing their jobs, pay and conditions.”
Jon Ritchie, North Tyneside Council director of resources, said contingency plans will be in place to ensure essential services will be delivered to residents.
