“Every point, goldust in the Premier League” was the reaction of Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew as his side came from behind to secure a point against his former club Newcastle United in the 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park on Wednesday night.
The home side fell behind late in the first half thanks to a goal from Papiss Cisse, a player Pardew brought to England three years ago, so he was not too surprised at the Senegalese striker coming back to haunt him.
“It was a good finish because he didn’t really get another chance but that’s Papiss, he doesn’t really need a high ratio of chances.” he said
The stalemate in South East London pushes the Eagles further clear of the relegation zone and Pardew was happy with their response after the interval, in particular the impact of the returning Yannick Bolasie, who crossed for Fraizer Campbell to net the equaliser.
“I was really pleased with our reaction second half,” Pardew said. “I thought we really took the game to Newcastle, took a few chances, but really it was the bench that salvaged the game for us.
“Yannick’s cross was of the highest order. He had no right to put a ball in of that quality in the room he had. It was great goal for us and there was only going to be one winner I thought at that point but we just couldn’t force a second goal.”
Meanwhile, Magpies head coach John Carver was delighted with a point and strongly defended his decision to withdraw Remy Cabella with five minutes remaining.
“I bring (Paul) Dummett on because I know all about Bolasie, he is a talented footballer, I worked with him every single day at Plymouth Argyle and I know he’s got a bright future ahead of him and he’s a talent,” he explained.
“You saw from almost his first touch when he arrived on the pitch, he shifts the ball quickly and put a quality ball in the box and they score from it. I was concerned that he would do that again and we would lose the game, so I had to do something about it.”
“Sometimes you have to take off one of your flair players to see out a game and get something from it and that’s why I brought Dummett on and I thought it nullified Bolasie and that’s why I made that substitution.”
