Bolsonaro set to be implicated in jewel sales scandal

JAIR BOLSONARO, Brazil’s right-wing former president, has been implicated in a jewel sales scandal, according to reports.

Veja magazine reported today that Mauro Cid, a former orderly to Mr Bolsonaro, is willing to admit helping to sell on jewellery given by the government of Saudi Arabia to buyers in the United States.

Lt-Col Cid is also said to have admitted transferring the loot to Brazil and into the hands of Mr Bolsonaro in a way that would not leave a trail.

Lt-Col Cid is prepared to tell authorities that he was following orders from the then president, who masterminded the scheme, according to the report.

Mr Bolsonaro has denied wrongdoing and his lawyers insist he never appropriated or diverted public property.

Federal police claim the much-criticised former president was involved in the sale of two luxury watches, a Rolex and a Patek Philippe, trousering about $68,000 (£53,300).

The authorities are also investigating the sale of other official gifts by Mr Bolsonaro worth nearly $200,000 (£156,000).
