DIDCOT-BASED Tesco warehouse workers face a “dirty depot and canteen closures” after outsourced cleaners and caterers announced pay strikes, their union Unite warned today.
Some of the staff – employed by contractor Atalian Servest – are paid as little as £10.42 an hour, including weekend and bank holiday work at no additional rate, to service a warehouse which is only heated to one degree, the union said.
It announced two 24-hour walkouts on September 1 and 7, followed by two three-day strikes from the 15-18 and 21-24.
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham accused the wealthy company, which reported profits of £84 million in 2021, of refusing to even negotiate.
“Atlalian Servest can fully afford to give our members a decent pay rise,” she said.
“Its failure to do so is a cynical attempt to further boost its profits at the expense of its workers.”
She stressed that her union is “entirely focused on the jobs, pay and conditions of its members.”
The firm was contacted for comment.
