Family perish in building collapse
India: A building under construction in the northern town of Mughalsarai collapsed overnight, killing 13 members of a family of weavers who were sleeping on the ground floor.
Three people escaped unhurt when the partially built first floor crashed down.
The victims included the building’s owner, Mohammad Kamarrudin, and members of his family, including two children under eight.
Kabila tells UN to mind own business
DR Congo: President Joseph Kabila renounced UN support for a military campaign against Rwandan Hutu rebels and criticised international interference in national affairs yesterday.
UN peacekeepers had been due to support an operation against the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR).
But they halted their assistance last week over concerns about human rights abuses by two generals tipped to lead the campaign.
20 dead in train and bus crash
Mexico: The number of confirmed dead from a collision between a bus and a freight train has been raised to 20, officials said at the weekend.
The cause of the accident at a crossing was still under investigation. It happened in the Tamaulipas town of Anahuac, which is near the border city of Nuevo Laredo.
Troops head for fight with Isis
United States: More than 4,000 soldiers based at Fort Carson, Colorado, were heading to Kuwait yesterday after President Barack Obama asked Congress to authorise military action against Islamic State (Isis).
The unit headed to Kuwait is Fort Carson’s heaviest force, armed with tanks and Bradley Fighting Vehicles. Many of its soldiers are veterans of one or more of the brigade’s previous combat tours in Iraq.
Suicide bomber kills seven at bus station
Nigeria: A female suicide bomber killed seven people at a bus station in the north-east city of Damaturu, the latest in a spate of similar attacks blamed on Boko Haram.
Witnesses said the assailant got out of a car and walked towards a small grocery store at the end of the terminal.
She then positioned herself amid the crowd outside the store and blew herself up.
President’s son’s embarrassment
Chile: The son of President Michelle Bachelet has resigned as head of her charitable foundation following
criticism that he and his wife profited from privileged access to a bank loan.
Sebastian Davalos claims the deal was not illegal but acknowledged on Friday that the controversy had “damaged the president and the government.”
Davalos and his wife allegedly benefited from privileged information and treatment in receiving a £6.5 million loan to buy property.
Officer dies in attack on traffic patrol
Egypt: Gunmen opened fire on a traffic police patrol in the town of Benha in the Nile delta yesterday, killing a policeman and wounding three others.
The gunmen fired on police from a flyover before fleeing and a police car was damaged.
Egyptian security forces have come
increasingly under attack since the 2013 removal of Islamist president Mohammed Morsi.
