IPCC begins investigation of failed abuse complaint

A POLICE watchdog yesterday began investigating an under-fire force, after claims that officers stopped a woman from making a complaint about an assault which left her with a fractured skull.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said it is looking into the response of South Yorkshire Police to the woman’s complaints about an abusive ex-boyfriend.

The woman told the IPCC the force had not properly investigated a number of allegations that she was physically and sexually assaulted by the man.

And she told the police watchdog that officers dissuaded her from pursuing a complaint about an incident that left her with a fractured skull.

An IPCC spokesman said the investigation would look at the woman’s contact with officers from South Yorkshire Police between 1995 and 1996.

South Yorkshire Police is already facing severe criticism over its failure to deal with child sexual abuse in Rotherham and an ongoing inquiry into the Hillsborough disaster.
