Mexico reports body floating alongside barrier erected by Texas to stop migrants crossing

MEXICO has reported what may be the first fatalities caused by a new anti-immigrant barrier erected in the Rio Grande river by the US state of Texas.

Mexico’s Foreign Relations Department said on Wednesday it had spotted a body floating along the course of the barrier and was still trying to recover it. Today it said it had pulled a second body from the river.

The identity of the deceased is unknown as are the causes of death, but the department noted it had warned the US that the barrier, consisting of a chain of bright orange buoys designed to obstruct attempts to cross, could increase the danger of drowning.

“We made clear our concern about the impact on migrants’ safety and human rights that these state policies would have,” it stated.

Mexico also maintains that the barrier violates treaties regulating the use of the border river. The US Justice Department also disapproves, and has filed a lawsuit against Texas Governor Greg Abbott seeking its removal.
