TRADE unionists in north-west England are calling on a Labour-run council to delay plans to axe library opening hours until after the general election.
Wirral council on Merseyside wants to cut the opening hours of about 16 libraries by 18 hours a week.
As reported in the Morning Star, campaigners occupied one of the threatened libraries last week.
The north-west regional council of the TUC has called on the local authority to wait.
“The general election is now less than 100 days away.
“Wirral’s Labour leader has said that if Labour wins the election, funds will be provided to reopen the libraries.
“We call upon Wirral Borough Council to postpone any decision on opening hours until after the election, stopping any unnecessary disruption to this vital service and showing the people of Wirral that they are on their side.”
