THE archdiocese of Cologne published its accounts for the first time yesterday following criticism of lavish spending by German bishops.
The super-see’s accounts showed it sitting pretty on €3.35 billion (£2.5bn) in assets, €2.4bn (£1.6bn) of which was invested in stocks, funds and companies.
Cologne is believed to be Germany’s richest diocese. Attention has been focused on church wealth in the country since “bishop of bling” Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst was investigated by the Vatican over the vast sums he spent on renovating his house.
