More than 30 Hazara kidnapped in Zabul

GUNMEN in the southern Afghan province of Zabul have kidnapped 30 members of the Hazara ethnic community, authorities said yesterday.

No group claimed responsibility for Monday’s swoop, but it appeared to be the latest in a series of attacks on Shi’ites in the predominantly Sunni country.

The gunmen kidnapped the 30 people, all men, from two vehicles on a major road, said Zabul provincial Governor Mohammad Ashraf.

He said that all women, children and non-Hazaras had been left behind.

Authorities are searching for those kidnapped, some of whom may be government officials, said Mr Ashraf.

Local government official Abdul Khaliq Ayubi said that the gunmen had all worn black clothing and black masks.

The Hazara, who account for 25 per cent of Afghanistan’s population, are mainly Shi’ite.
