AUSTERITY-HIT train drivers are set to stage another week of industrial action later this month, their union Aslef said today.
Members at 15 train operators will refuse to work overtime between July 17 and 22 as part of a year-long dispute over plummeting take-home pay, the union warned.
The announcement comes hot on the heels of a six-day overtime ban hitting 16 train-operating companies, including Great Western, Northern and South Western, this week.
The action will have a massive impact on services since most operators do not employ enough drivers to run their timetables without relying on overtime.
Aslef general secretary Mick Whelan said: “We want to resolve this dispute — train drivers don’t want to be inconveniencing the public.
“That’s why we have given the government and rail operators plenty of opportunities to come to the table, but it is clear that they do not want a resolution.
“Our members are not prepared to accept the government’s attempts to force our industry into managed decline.”
Ministers have repeatedly claimed to be independent actors in the dispute, but the union has noted that they dictate employers’ remits as per their contracts.
