Hopkins calls on Labour to get tough on tax-evaders

LEFT Labour MP Kelvin Hopkins called on his party yesterday to levy 50 per cent tax on earnings above £60,000 a year and “send tax avoiders and evaders to prison.”

Mr Hopkins used an address opening Saturday’s CLPD conference to warn of the decline of centre-left parties Pasok in Greece and the PSOE in Spain.

“The Labour Party has really got to move to the left because we’re being threatened from the left,” he said.

And he said tackling tax evasion and avoiders should be central to the party’s bid to win back disaffected voters.

“As an MP I earn over £60,000 a year and I think I should pay more tax,” he said.

“People say you can’t raise tax because they’ll just find better ways to avoid it. So let’s send a few of them to prison.”
