EGYPT: A rare gun battle along Israel’s southern border with Egypt left three Israeli soldiers and an Egyptian officer dead on Saturday, officials said.

Israel said that the Egyptian border guard crossed into Israel at the Nitzana border crossing and killed the three soldiers before he was fatally shot by troops.

Egypt said that he had been chasing drug smugglers when he entered Israel.

GERMANY: A fire at a refugee shelter housing 300 people in the city of Apolda in eastern Germany killed one person and injured at least eight others early on Sunday, according to local police.

Writing on Twitter, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser called the incident “terrible news.”

She confirmed that an investigation was under way to determine the cause of the fire.

SRI LANKA: Hundreds of members of Sri Lanka’s LGBT community paraded through the streets of the capital Colombo today to mark the Pride month and demand an end to discrimination.

The marchers carried rainbow flags and placards calling for a ban of so-called conversion therapies, an end of police harassment of the LGBT community and equal treatment.

Sri Lanka is a predominantly Buddhist nation with conservative values and it is rare for people with different sexual orientation to voice their demands in public.

GREECE: Five police officers accused of cooperating with human traffickers to facilitate the entry of at least 100 migrants into Greece are being held in custody pending trial.

The five officers had been testifying before an examining magistrate since Saturday morning at the border town of Orestiada, in north-eastern Greece.

Authorities say the officers facilitated at least 12 border crossings, collaborating with four traffickers who operated from Turkey.
