Job fears as government shuts shops on Sundays

THE Hungarian government brought in new regulations today limiting opening hours for most shops.

Starting on March 15, shops can only open between 6am and 10pm and are banned from opening on Sundays.

Exceptions include pharmacies, small shops operated by their owners or family members and shops located in hospitals, prisons, petrol stations, airports, bus and train stations.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that the government’s objective was to “prevent anyone from having to work on Sunday.”

But trade unions and employers’ groups warned that the shorter opening hours would lead to layoffs.
