Schools ‘must cut’ to pay teachers

HEADTEACHERS will be forced to cut spending in their schools to give teachers a pay rise under new Tory plans, unions warned yesterday.

Education Secretary Nicky Morgan recommended on Wednesday night that all teachers in England should get a 1 per cent pay rise.

But the government has not increased school funding, meaning any pay rises will have to come from existing school budgets.

Trade unions warned that school funding cuts would mean many teachers going without the raise.

“The government has to reconsider its policy of cutting funding to schools,” said National Union of Teachers (NUT) leader Christine Blower.

“Schools need more funding and teachers’ pay needs to rise.

“Otherwise, we simply won’t have enough teachers to cope with growing pupil numbers.”

After handing powers over pay to headteachers, the Tories also sought to further undermine national pay rates by allowing heads to give some teachers a discretionary 2 per cent rise.

“Let’s be very clear, this is not a commitment to new money for schools to fund a pay increase of 2 per cent,” warned

Labour shadow education secretary Tristram Hunt.
Tory PM David Cameron was caught up yesterday in the school funding crisis caused by his government.

The sixth form he has chosen for his daughter Nancy is facing an investigation after leaders were caught asking parents for cash.

A form sent to parents of teenagers given a place at academy Grey Coat Hospital School asks them to state whether they accept the offer and then return the slip — with a cheque for £120 for the school fund.

The document seen by the Schools Week newspaper says the fund allows the school to run extracurricular activities.

A government spokesperson said: “Any claim that the School Admissions Code has been breached will be investigated.”
