Canadian union wins pay rise and better conditions for 120,000 public servants

CANADA'S largest union reached a tentative agreement with the government on Monday for more than 120,000 public servants after nearly two years of bargaining and 12 days of strikes.

Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) secured a four-year deal for administrative, maintenance and port workers at Canada’s immigration services and other government agencies, including the fire service.

The union said the deal secured a fair contract for members that exceeds the employer’s original offer before the launch of strike action.

“During a period of record high inflation and soaring corporate profits, workers were told to accept less, but our members came together and fought for better,” said PSAC national president Chris Aylward.

“This agreement delivers important gains for our members that will set the bar for all workers in Canada.”

Some 35,000 Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) workers remain on the picket line. PSAC union rep Alex Silas said the strikes “won’t be won until we’ve secured a fair deal for workers at CRA.”
