Strike threat sees bosses scrap cuts

UNITE claimed victory yesterday after bosses at Dulwich Picture Gallery in south London withdrew threats to axe jobs in the face of a week’s strike action.
 
Management planned to shed 19 of 36 gallery assistants, replacing them with casual staff on zero-hours contracts.
 
Staff voted for a week’s strike action which was due to start last Friday, March 13.
 
But management caved in and withdrew the proposal.
 
Unite regional officer Peter Storey said: “The proposed sackings were not genuine redundancies, would have been illegal, damaged the future of the gallery and experience of visitors wishing to view the 600 works including masterpieces by Canaletto, Gainsborough, Rembrandt and Rubens.
 
“Unite members should be congratulated on their campaign. It illustrates the power of a united workforce against ill-considered, unnecessary and damaging cuts — it was a masterpiece of solidarity.”
