ISRAELI forces shot and killed a Palestinian man at a refugee camp in the occupied West Bank on Monday.
This was the latest blood shed in months of escalating violence from the Israelis that has seen 95 Palestinians killed by Israeli fire in the West Bank this year.
During the same time, 19 Israelis have been killed in Palestinian attacks.
Jericho governor Jihad Abu al-Asal told Palestinian media that the man, Suleiman Ayesh, had been fatally shot in the Aqabat Jaber refugee camp in the central West Bank, which has repeatedly been the scene of attacks by Israeli troops on Palestinians in recent months.
The Israeli military that said it was operating in the area when two suspects were spotted fleeing. A spokesman said that their troops opened fire and struck at least one of the suspects.
Israeli forces are reported to have detained a number of Palestinians during this and several other night raids carried out across the West Bank.
The violence comes as Israel is set to mark its Memorial Day for fallen soldiers and victims of attacks, which began on Monday, followed by today’s 75th Independence Day.
Israeli troops closed off the West Bank and Gaza Strip to all Palestinians wishing to leave from Monday afternoon, except for humanitarian cases. The closure is expected to continue until tomorrow.
Israel regularly restricts movement out of the occupied West Bank and Gaza during holidays in what it claims is a security precaution.
The Israeli military has launched near-nightly arrest raids into West Bank cities, villages and towns, claiming that they are home to militant networks.
Palestinians say that the raids entrench Israel’s 56-year, open-ended occupation of Palestine.
Tensions have been particularly high over the last month, as Muslims marked the holy month of Ramadan, which this year coincided with the Jewish holiday of Passover.
