Far-right in Lincolnshire and Derbyshire humiliated twice over the weekend by anti-racist turn out

RACISTS and fascists from far-right group Patriotic Alternative were humiliated twice at the weekend as they attempted to stage rallies against refugees and asylum-seekers in Lincolnshire and Derbyshire.

On Saturday, the group protested in Lincoln against Home Office proposals to use a disused RAF base outside the town to house asylum-seekers.

They tried to stage a rally in the centre of Lincoln but were heavily outnumbered by ant-racists.

Earlier today, Patriotic Alternative targeted a hotel used to house asylum-seekers at Long Eaton in Derbyshire.

About 50 supporters of the far-right group were met by three times as many opponents.

They were eventually herded into a park protected by a heavy phalanx of police, which enabled them to hold a rally.

Stand Up To Racism’s Michael Bradley, who was at the Lincoln protest, said: “We had about 150 people and there were about 30 of them.

“Nothing like this has happened in Lincoln for a long time, so it was a big deal.

“The response in the town was fantastic, really positive.

“Young people especially were taking stickers and leaflets and about 100 signed up to get involved in anti-racist activities.”

In Long Eaton, anti-racists told of receiving a rough reception from police, accusing police officers who had protected Patriotic Alternative supporters of being friendly with them.

Paul Sillett of Unite Against Fascism, who was present, said that 50 racists had been met by three times as many anti-racists.

“We basically stopped them doing anything for half an hour. Police couldn’t do anything at first, but then reinforcements arrived and protected them,” he said.
