INDONESIA: Separatist gunmen opened fire on a military post in Indonesia’s restive Papua province, killing at least six soldiers and leaving dozens of others missing, the army and the rebels said on Sunday.
Attackers from the West Papua Liberation Army, the armed wing of the Free Papua Movement, carried out the assault against Indonesian soldiers on Saturday in the hilly district of Nduga, a stronghold of separatists who have battled Indonesian rule in the mineral-rich but impoverished region since the early 1960s.
KENYA: At least 10 people died when the bus they were travelling in left the road and rolled several times in southern Kenya, police said on Sunday.
The passengers were on their way back to the coastal city of Mombasa after attending a funeral in the Mwatate area, Taita Taveta County, on Saturday evening.
DUBAI: A fire swept through an apartment building in an older neighbourhood of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, killing at least 16 people and injuring another nine, authorities said on Sunday.
The state-linked newspaper The National said that the blaze happened on Saturday in Dubai’s al-Ras neighbourhood, a tightly knit warren of streets and alleys home to one of its oldest neighbourhoods.
SYRIA: Islamic State militants have killed 26 people who were foraging for wild truffles in Syria’s Hama region, opposition and state media reported Sunday.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition media group based in Britain, said that civilians and military personnel were among the victims of the armed attack in the eastern outskirts of the city of Hama, 115 miles north of the capital Damascus.
