World in brief: April 11, 2023

UNITED STATES: Police say five people have been killed in a shooting at a bank building in central Louisville and the suspected shooter is also dead.

Police say six others were brought to the hospital after the shooting this morning.

UNITED STATES: Two black former Democratic lawmakers who were expelled by Republican representatives in Tennessee after calling for stronger gun control measures say they want to be reappointed and then elected back to their seats.

Nashville’s metro council was likely to reappoint Justin Jones to the seat during a special meeting last night. The position of Justin Pearson, who is from Memphis, will be considered by a panel tomorrow.

 

DALAI LAMA: Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama apologised today after a video showing him kissing a child on the lips and asking the boy to “suck my tongue” triggered criticism.

A statement said the 87-year-old leader regretted the incident and wished to “apologise to the boy and his family, as well as his many friends across the world, for the hurt his words may have caused.”

The incident occurred at a public gathering in February at the Tsuglakhang temple in Dharamsala, where the exiled separatist lives. 

 

NORTHERN IRELAND: Belfast North MP John Finucane criticised the Democratic Unionist Party on Sunday for not resuming power-sharing after losing the Stormont elections last May.

The Sinn Fein MP called on the DUP to “recognise that they failed and get on with the business of representing those who elected them within the institutions” of the Good Friday Agreement.
