TURKISH Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu will visit Egypt, his ministry announced today.

This is the first such high-level trip in more than a decade as the countries repair relations damaged in the wake of the 2011 Arab Spring.

A statement from the Turkish Foreign Ministry said that Mr Cavusoglu will go to Egypt on Saturday at the invitation of his Egyptian counterpart, Sameh Shoukry. 

The ministers will discuss bilateral relations as well as regional and international issues.

Mr Cavusoglu’s trip follows Mr Shoukry’s visit to Turkey’s earthquake-devastated region last month.

Diplomatic relations between Ankara and Cairo have been frosty for almost a decade. 

Relations soured after the military coup in Egypt in 2013 that led to Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi coming to power in 2014.

Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan did not support the ousting of the late Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi by the Egyptian military and so severed relations after the coup.

In recent years Turkey has softened its critical approach to Egypt as it tried to repair ties. 

In November, Mr Erdogan and Mr Sissi were photographed shaking hands during the soccer World Cup in Qatar.
