Students join UAL anti-cuts protest

STUDENTS will stage a demonstration today in protest against devastating cuts to foundation courses at University of the Arts London (UAL).

The demonstration, under the banner “March to stop the cuts at UAL: free education for all,” will bring together student activists from campuses across the country.

UAL’s proposed cuts to will mean the scrapping of 800 student places and dozens of jobs, the activists say.

The university’s Central Saint Martins campus has been the scene of a student occupation since Thursday, with activists demanding the cuts be reversed.

Students from as far afield as Birmingham will join the demo.

A suite at LSE has also been occupied for a week. Students there are demanding the democratisation of the education system.

Natalie Fiennes, 23, from the LSE occupation, said: “We demand an education that is liberating, which does not have a price tag. We want a university run by students, lecturers and workers.”

Gathering at 2pm outside LSE, students will march to the London College of Communication.
