City of Liverpool 2-1 Ramsbottom United
CITY OF LIVERPOOL picked up a deserved three points to move to 12th in the Northern Premier League West Division, but left it late against Lee Donafee’s Rams.
City of Liverpool started well and defender Michael Grogan almost marked his debut with a goal, but his powerful header was hacked off the line.
The Purps went ahead when a goalkeeping howler from visiting keeper Harry Turner saw possession squandered in his own box to John McGrath. The Purps winger was denied from close range before the ball broke kindly for in-form marksman Danny Mitchley to rifle into the unguarded net.
Ramsbottom equalised against the run of play when a defensive lapse saw Billy Hasler-Cregg clear, and he fired in via a touch from keeper Ben Barnes.
After the break Grogan was again denied when his bullet header was cleared off the line. At the other end James Murphy hit the bar from distance on a rare Rams foray forward.
Purps manager Paul McNally gambled, chasing a winner, bringing defender Danny Shaw off for striker James Steele — and it paid off when a cross from the right saw keeper Turner punch under pressure from Kev Ellison. The ball broke to Steele, who hammered home from around the penalty spot to win it, making it five goals against Rammy this season.
