Hundreds demand new powers for Wales

HUNDREDS of people rallied on the steps of the Senedd in Cardiff on Saturday to demand the Welsh nation be given the same powers as Scotland.

Former Plaid Cymru MP Adam Price, author Catrin Dafydd, Cymdeithas yr Iaith (Welsh Language Society) chairman Jamie Bevan and sculptor David Petersen were among speakers to highlight the benefits of home rule to the economy of Wales.

“Wales is in the slow lane — economically and socially — it is lagging behind Scotland, England, Ireland and every other nation when it comes to the question of power,” said Mr Price.

A YouGov poll published last year by pressure group Yes Cymru revealed 63 per cent of Wales wanted to see the National Assembly gain the same new powers as Scotland.

Yes Cymru spokesman Iestyn Rhobert said: “The responsibility for Wales’s future rests on our shoulders. We cannot allow Wales to get left behind. It’s time for fair play for our country.

“We, the people of Wales, should have the powers to control our land and water as well as who drills below it. The powers to run our police force and our courts. To be able to decide on broadcasting, taxation and welfare policies.”
