Clegg makes light of gaffe over £80k donation

NICK CLEGG admitted yesterday that the Liberal Democrats had incorrectly declared an £80,000 donation from the director of a petrol station chain.

The cash was given by supporters Graham Tobbell and Susan Tobbell, but Mr Tobell’s name was recorded in returns to the Electoral Commission watchdog.

Ms Tobbell is a director of Malthurst, Britain’s largest independent filling station chain, leaving the party open to speculation that her name was omitted to avoid tarnishing the Lib Dems’ green credentials.

“I am very proud to be called a friend and supported by Susan,” said Mr Clegg. “I think she is a wonderful individual, a fantastic businesswoman, a real role model to many women who want to go into business. She is running an excellent business.

“The party is very happy to correct the record. We have contacted the Electoral Commission directly and we have explained and apologised to Graham and Susan for any embarrassment caused.”
