Alan Frank reviews Force Majeure (15)

Directed by Ruben Ostlund 5/5

“WE’RE here because Tomas works too much; he’s going to dedicate five days to his family,” explains Ebba (Lisa Loven Kongsli) of her husband as they embark on an Alpine skiing holiday with their two young children.

But when Tomas (Johannes Bah Kuhnke) abandons the family during a potentially fatal avalanche, his relations with his wife and the children seem terminally blighted.

Subsequent events, as he attempts to “cure” the raw emotional wounds to his family, are both dramatically compelling and blackly comic.

This Scandinavian gem is a perceptive and perfectly acted Cannes award-winning portrait of an apparently ordinary Swedish family under increasing strain after a cataclysmic incident.

Just pray there’s no utterly redundant Hollywood remake.
