Arts Ahead: The Straw Chair

GLASGOW/TOURING THEATRE The Straw Chair Tron Theatre Trongate April 14-18

Sue Glover’s play The Straw Chair tells the story of 17-year-old Isabel and her minister husband who, in the early years of the 18th century, arrive on the remote island of Hirta (St Kilda) to spread the gospel in the Gaelic-speaking north.

The early start to their marriage worsens as they encounter the extraordinary Lady Grange who, desperate to return to civilisation, tells stories of betrayal, banishment and abduction and clings with tragic dignity to the one thing she has left in the world — an old straw chair.

This profoundly powerful play about liberty, lost love and female empowerment gets its first Scottish tour since 1988 and is well worth seeking out. Tours until May 9.
