COMMUNISTS in Scotland will call today for Britain to be made a federal republic, with home-rule parliaments in Scotland and Wales.
The proposal forms part of the Communist Party’s Manifesto for Scotland, which is being launched in Glasgow.
The party says that a federal parliament should control currency, banking, interest rates and taxes on wealth and capital — with a constitutional obligation to redistribute tax income geographically across Britain according to social need.
All other powers, including borrowing powers sufficient to fund industrial development and develop public ownership of utilities, would be devolved to parliaments representing the various nations of Britain.
The party’s Glasgow North West hopeful Zoe Hennessy said: ‘I am proud to stand as a candidate for the Communist Party.
“Our party has a long tradition of fighting for working-class power, organising in the trade unions and in Scottish communities in the battle for a better life for working people.”
