MOSCOW said yesterday it would take at least six months to deliver an S-300 air defence missile system to Iran.
However, the Kremlin confirmed that a deal to swap Russian goods for Iranian oil was already under way.
The US criticised President Vladimir Putin’s decision on Monday to lift a five-year ban on delivery of the missile system, which would help Iran fend off an air attack.
White House spokesman Josh Earnest also claimed the barter deal would raise serious concerns and could interfere with sanctions imposed by the US and its allies.
Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the barter deal was already operative.
He stressed that this trade was not barred under sanctions approved by the UN security council.
Tehran’s security head Ali Shamkhani announced yesterday that a 2010 breach-of-contract claim in a Geneva court against Russia for non-delivery of the missiles would be dropped only after delivery.
