Disabled residents without adequate facilities

THOUSANDS of disabled people are being force bathe in their kitchens because councils have failed to adapt their homes, a charity revealed yesterday.

Anyone with disabilities that require home adaptations can apply for a grant, but freedom of information requests fired off to 245 housing authorities found that two-thirds had failed to allocate the money within the one-year limit.

The Leonard Cheshire Disability charity a shocking 45 per cent made residents wait for over two years.

The failures are leaving disabled residents trapped in a few rooms on their ground floors and unable to get in and out of doors.

Adam Lotun, a wheelchair-user in Kingston-upon-Thames, said: “I have been trapped without a ‘disabled-friendly’ home for 10 years and all I want is somewhere I can live independently with my family.”

Leonard Cheshire Disability campaigns director Andy Cole said: “All political parties must address this housing crisis and ensure the funding is put in place for local councils to resolve this.”
