Sport in brief: October 3

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Reigning champions Leicester Riders lost their first game of the season 89-78 to the London Lions, but it’s the Manchester Giants who top the BBL after they won 84-64 in Newcastle before beating Plymouth 92-79 on Sunday night.

Bristol remain unbeaten after seeing off winless bottom club Sheffield 68-55, the Caledonia Gladiators overcame Surrey 81-72 and Cheshire edged out Newcastle 80-77.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: While the Champions League dominates coverage tonight, Congleton will be travelling to Fylde for their FA Cup third qualifying round replay.

The teams drew 1-1 in Saturday’s televised match.

Elsewhere, Hanley Town host Chester, Oxford City travel to Plymouth Parkway, Curzon Ashton meet Scarborough, Biggleswade take on Billericay, Boston play Basford and Ashington face Stocksbridge Steels. Winners receive £5,625, losers £1,875.

MEN’S ICE HOCKEY: Guildford top the Elite League after beating Fife 5-3 twice over the weekend while Cardiff maintained their 100 per cent record with a 3-0 win in Manchester on Sunday to claim second.

Manchester had won 5-4 in overtime against Dundee the night before.

Sheffield won 3-2 at Coventry to move third.

Champions Belfast are still to play a League game but beat Glasgow 5-0 to remain unbeaten in six Challenge Cup games.

MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: Part-timers Batley Bulldogs’ dreams of being promoted to the Super League were snuffed out as they were comprehensively beaten 44-12 by Leigh in the Championship play-off final on Sunday.

Leigh have lost just once since being relegated from the Super League last year.

Swinton edged out Doncaster 16-10 in the League One play-off to claim a place in the Championship along with champions Keighley.
